European retailers are increasing limits for contactless card payments

Published April 7, 2020

Grocers across the world are focused on keeping their employees and customers safe by limiting contact between people and surfaces, especially at the checkout. One way they’re reducing contact is by increasing the limit for contactless card payments to encourage more shoppers to pay this way.

In Europe and the UK, retailers are increasing the limit from £30 to £45 as part of this initiative. In the UK, leaders in the retail, finance and payments sectors had already been considering the increase. The European Banking Authority, meanwhile, has encouraged payment firms to increase contactless payment limits to £50.

The British Retail Consortium said the move will reduce the need for physical contact with payment devices where people need to input their PIN. The increase will also mean more transactions can be made without handling cash.

Other European markets adopt contactless payments

German customers are also switching to contactless payment due to coronavirus fears. They prefer the speed and convenience of using their contactless card, which helps cut checkout queues.

No matter the region, the benefits of contactless card payments—faster transactions, reduced queues, less interaction—are helping to minimize the time the customer spends in stores.
