In addition to assisting the world in nearly 700 million transactions on a daily basis, in the end it’s our actions, not our words that truly sets NCR apart. Everyday our employees demonstrate our Shared Values, especially by participating in the local communities where our iNCRedibles work. This past school year, NCR employees volunteered to tutor local first graders for 30 minutes every week through a program called TutorMate in partnership with Innovations for Learning. The program centers around helping students improve their reading and comprehension skills, and allows tutors the convenience of conducting sessions virtually via their laptops. The program has been a huge success and was extremely rewarding for all those involved. One iNCRedible, Fred Bacote, was overjoyed at the opportunity to be “investing in a young person’s education and the impact that will have on their future.”
Many students saw tremendous growth in their reading level throughout the program. Lara Wortman experienced this first-hand with her student: “WOW! I am still bragging about this --- so proud of my student! She started at Level 3 and we closed out the year at Level 7. She moved up four levels from February to mid-May.”
The virtual aspect of the weekly sessions provides ease of access for NCR employees and the students and ensures seamless participation. Jamie Graves, a two-time volunteer knew right away he’d be back for a third year, “I absolutely intend to participate in the program again next year. It is easy to manage, and it is so important for the students.” Bacote even wants a lifetime subscription, saying “I hope the program remains available for me to participate in for the rest of my life!”
Overall, the program has been a successful partnership and NCR is looking forward to continuing to participate in the TutorMate program. To see more about life at NCR, check out our #NCRlife page.
