NCR looked to implement its own innovative new technology, 2ST™, two-sided thermal printing, to drive improvement in the ConnectShip line process.
The new Sato GY412T two sided thermal printer simultaneously prints the shipping label on the front of the 2ST label and the packing slip on the back of that label. Both the front of the 2ST label and the liner are direct thermal coated. Now at the start of the process, only the blue pick ticket is printed. This means that the yellow paper, or packing list, the toner to print it and the laser printer are eliminated. Since there is only one printed document, workers gain the time they used to spend matching documents and removing the NCR address from the reseller shipments. This not only saves time but also eliminates any errors that may occur if the pick and pack slips are mismatched.
The orders are still picked, brought to the ConnectShip line and quality checked; however, all of the time spent folding and applying the packing slip to the carton is eliminated. In addition to the time savings, the cost of the packing slip pouch tape is eliminated. At the final step of the process the 2ST label with the packing slip on the back and the shipping label on the front is printed and applied to the order.
